A breast lift is designed for the woman who is content with her breast size but is unhappy with her non youthful shape. This might be the result of weight loss, breast feeding or due to congenital causes. A vertical mastopexy method is routinely utilized in these cases, resulting in a youthful breast shape and inconspicuous “lollipop” type scars. On occasion, small amounts of tissue can be removed from the base of the breast to further improve shape and/or symmetry. A breast lift alone does not routinely increase the fullness of the upper part of the breast (called the upper pole). Therefore, small breast implants may be placed during the same procedure if a woman desires a lift along with a modest increase in the volume of the upper aspect of the breast. Dr. Sultan will conduct a full discussion with each prospective patient regarding her goals. He will outline realistic expectations of the procedure based on her anatomy and formulate a plan specifically designed for her own personal situation. A mastopexy alone is a two hour or shorter procedure, is performed under a light general anesthetic (called LMA) and typically results in a mild degree of post-operative pain. Placement of an implant adds to the length of surgery and to the degree of pain because implants are typically positioned below the chest muscles. Rarely we may be able to substitute the patient’s own fat, in the form of fat injections instead of an implant to improve upper breast fullness in a subtle way.
